Self Storage Tips

Packing Tips

  • Pack early! Give yourself time to go through everything, and maybe get rid of things you don’t need while you’re at it.
  • Be prepared! Make sure you have boxes, packing paper, packing tape, and a felt-tip pen to label with. Do not use newspaper to pack with fabric goods as the ink may stain.
  • Keep it together! Things like bed frames that disassemble should be kept together with everything labeled so that when you put it back together, you can figure it out easily.
  • Don’t overpack! When it comes to heavier items like books, make sure you only pack them as heavy as you can still lift them. Lining the boxes with plastic can help protect them as well.
  • Don’t underpack either! Make sure to add filler like packing paper to boxes so things don’t shift inside the box and so the box will hold up if you stack other boxes on top of it.
  • Be careful with your breakables! Pack dishes, glasses, and other fragile items carefully with plenty of padding and paper so they don’t get jostled around. Add plenty of padding and packing paper when wrapping mirrors and paintings.
  • Don’t forget about your lamps and lampshades! Be sure to pack them with lots of padding in boxes or drawers so they don’t get crushed or damaged during the move.
  • Preserve your photos! If your photos will be in storage for a long time, you may want to keep them sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard, taped together, to keep the photos laying flat.
  • Safety first! Do not store combustible, perishable, or illegal items in storage. Paint, cleaning fluids, chemicals, gasoline, perishable food, or firearms, paraphernalia, etc. Also, remember to empty the tanks on things like lawnmowers and other gas-powered equipment before storing them.
  • Prevent scratches! Wrap up furniture legs with bubble wrap and use slip covers or plastic sheets to cover your furniture.
  • Prepare your appliances! Clean and dry them before putting them in storage. Use paper or wedges to keep moving parts and handles safe during moving. Tape doors shut during the move, but in storage, prop doors open for air circulation.
  • Pack it in! If you have drawers, appliances, or cupboards to store, you can put them to use by putting books, CDs, linens, towels, and other things inside them to save even more space! Don’t forget to prop them open to let the air circulate.

Storage Tips

  • Use your space wisely! Only rent the size you need.
  • Stay organized! Label all your boxes appropriately including what’s in them, and if they’re fragile, make a note “This End Up”.
  • Stack by weight! Heavy things on bottom, light boxes on top so they won’t get crushed.
  • Keep your stuff safe and clean! Use plastic covers and sheets on the floor as well as to protect your furniture like mattresses, chairs, sofas, etc.
  • Ventilate! Leave room between your boxes/furniture and the walls, and if you have crates or pallets, use them to keep your stuff off the floor a few inches.
  • Lock it up! Get a good lock for your storage unit that won’t rust or damage easily.
  • Write it down! Make a list of all items in storage, and take pictures to keep track of everything.
  • Store strategically! Put items you’ll use often towards the front of your unit.
  • Make a path! Leave room in your storage unit to move around and access all your items if you need to. Save space! Remove legs and put tables, desks, and sofas on end (remembering to put your plastic sheet on the floor!)
  • Stack it! If you have a lot of boxes, stacking them floor to ceiling, remembering to put the heaviest items on bottom and lighter ones on top, can save space. Just don’t stack them too high or they might topple over!
  • If you are storing heat, cold or humidity sensitive items, be sure to get a climate controlled unit.
  • Take it home! When removing electronic items from storage, TVs, radios, computers, etc, let them get back to room temperature first before plugging them in.
  • Keep it current! Be sure to keep the office informed of your address and phone number in case of emergency.
